My program director in my psychiatry residency program, Dr. Panagiota Korenis. She encouraged reading and learning outside of formal lectures and helped to develop my interest in research, population health and collaborative care models. She also encouraged my interview and therapy style and helped to co-author multiple of my journal publications.
When I was in middle school my grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia and required round-the-clock specialized care. I witnessed doctors, nurses and support staff help him and the other patients during a very difficult time as well as their families. I noticed how important it is to not just treat the patient, but the whole family unit as well.
A unique aspect of my medical education is that I have been able to provide meaningful healthcare in multiple countries. This has allowed me the opportunity to sees the pros and cons of multiple systems, always trying to improve on my own ability to provide the highest quality care to my patients.
