I knew from a young age I wanted to work in medicine, and I credit a number of role models for fostering this sense of purpose. Several of my family members worked in medicine as physicians, nurses, and mental health professionals, and I was able to see how challenging yet endlessly rewarding their careers were.
My family medicine clinical rotation during PA school was in a busy, rural clinic. Many of the patients seen there every day did not live within reasonable driving distance of medical specialists, so they often relied on their PCP to provide comprehensive and accessible care for a wide range of concerns. This was in stark contrast to most of my other rotations which were located in busy cites with easy access to many providers via large academic health centers and private practices alike. This experience taught me the importance of building strong relationships with patients as a primary care provider, and doing our best to provide necessary support to meet all of their needs, including mental and physical healthcare.
During my clinical education, I had the opportunity to learn about gender affirming care both in adolescent as well as adult patient populations. Observing and participating in this realm of patient care across a wide age range gave me a unique opportunity to familiarize myself with gender affirming treatments and also develop my skills in creating safe spaces for patients of all backgrounds and identities so that they may feel comfortable receiving the care they need and deserve.
