When I worked as an OBGYN medical assistant, I often worked alongside a midwife at our clinic. She had been practicing for over 30 years, and her patients adored her. She showed me the hardness and softness contained in a midwife and, through her actions, I had an immersive experience learning the art of midwifery long before I earned my certification.
I once had a patient on a cardiac floor [who was] experiencing an exacerbation of heart disease. He had not been up out of bed for weeks and seemed to be getting worse by the day. My coworker and I bathed him, got him changed and ready for the day. The next day I returned to the hospital, and he was making his way down the hall with a smile on his face. I can't say for sure [what] was the catalyst, but the little things are sometimes overlooked in healthcare. We are caring for the whole person; body, mind, and soul. All three need to be addressed and balanced in order to truly treat an ailment.
My education was accelerated to where I completed 5 years worth of education in less than three years. The determination and dedication it takes to get through the program built resilience, and witnessing my peers and myself grow and thrive in such conditions was inspiring. I was also able to practice in three different states during school, experiencing variety in patient population and practice.
I am dedicated to any cause I truly believe in, and Neighborhood is certainly a place I believe in. I am excited to provide care to all my patients.
