When my grandmother was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, I saw firsthand how compassionate and skilled healthcare providers can profoundly impact both patients and their families. Motivated by that experience, I began volunteering at the hospital where she received treatment, where I was further inspired by the resilience and gratitude of the patients I met. These experiences strengthened my desire to pursue a career in healthcare and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
During my cardiology rotation...despite our demanding schedule, my preceptor always took the time to answer patients’ questions and thoroughly explain their conditions, procedures, and treatment options. I was humbled by his commitment to treating the whole person rather than just their medical condition, and it reinforced the importance of compassion and communication in providing excellent patient care.
I was especially drawn to understanding the molecular mechanisms behind disease. I had the opportunity to work in two translational research labs, where I saw how discoveries in the lab can directly influence patient care. These experiences deepened my appreciation for the role of research in improving outcomes and emphasized the importance of staying current with emerging treatments and continually advancing the field of medicine.
