Our collaborative approach can make for a smooth transition to pediatric care after a mother gives birth.
Parents know that life changes with the addition of a new baby to the family, but the place where you receive your healthcare doesn’t have to change. In fact, there are many ways that OB-GYN patients who are seen for their pregnancy and birth by Neighborhood Health Center providers can benefit by continuing their children’s healthcare with Neighborhood pediatricians.
“The two specialties can collaborate on the child's care by discussing changing family dynamics, risk factors that arose during pregnancy or birth, review genetic testing results and help link families with services they may need in a timely fashion,” explains Laura Poplewski, RN, MSN, CNM who is a Certified Nurse Midwife at Neighborhood. “The time it takes for an outside pediatrician facility to request and review prenatal and birth records will be eliminated. It is also very nice that the family is already familiar with the office locations and staff making it an easy transition to schedule appointments.”
With the transition to pediatric care there is a natural shift in focus from the health of the mother to the health of the child, but a Neighborhood pediatrician will make a point to make sure the parent is also doing well. This could include screening for depression, discussions regarding contraception, or breastfeeding guidance. This collaboration can be key in keeping the whole family healthy and properly supported.
