I never knew my grandfather; however, I grew up hearing stories about him and his achievements in healthcare. He was Chief of Surgery, served as a doctor for the 1980 Olympics, and eventually did sports medicine at Ithaca College. I knew from a young age I wanted to practice medicine and follow in his footsteps.
A time that I experienced good quality healthcare was during the Covid 19 pandemic working in the intensive care unit. During a time that was filled with unknowns, I witnessed providers show compassion, bravery, and resilience. Healthcare is diagnosing and treating ailments, but it is also about connecting and communicating with patients. Good healthcare encompasses all of these elements, and during such a trying time in medicine, and the world, I witnessed it in abundance in the hospital I worked in.
I was fortunate enough to complete one of my PA Clinical Rotations in Cape Coast, a fishing port in the south of Ghana. I was able to work in their Emergency Department and Critical Care Unit for one month, and learn a different approach to medicine than I was used to. I expanded my horizons, not only to a new culture that I fell in love with, but a new approach to medicine. Given the lack of technological capabilities that I had grown accustomed to in my previous rotations, I was able to hone in on my physical exam skills, use a different approach to diagnostics that was new to me, and grow not only as a provider, but as a person.
When not working I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, and playing with my puppy!
