Examples of our providers offering care and sharing knowledge beyond the walls of Neighborhood Health Center.
The providers at Neighborhood Health Center are also active members of the Western New York community and examples abound of them sharing their knowledge and talents in a variety of settings. Here are a couple of recent examples:
Our Chief Medical Administrator James Burruano, DPM ACFAS took part in a UB HEALS event at the Holy Cross Shelter offering foot exams and health advice. People who are experiencing homelessness often spend much of the day moving from place to place, so foot care is critical. Dr. Burruano stresses the importance of consistent medical care to avoid smaller problems becoming serious ones, and he shared information about Neighborhood's sliding scale fees for those who might have difficulty paying for care.
Neighborhood is also a Health Care for the Homeless provider which means we can provide health services at no cost to the patient. Students in the physician assistant program at Canisius College had the opportunity to learn recently from Neighborhood's Janette Evans, ANP-BC who leads our Healthcare for the Homeless program. She spoke with students about caring for patients who are experiencing homelessness. As part of their studies, these students are learning about the many social determinants of health.
